Did you know that the original Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella began as a made-for-TV-musical starring Julie Andrews in 1957? It was later followed by two more remakes for TV, one in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren, and another in 1997 starring pop-singer sensation Brandy. After the newest Broadway revival in 2013, with a reconceived book by Douglas Carter Beane, more stars joined the cast of Cinderella, including pop star sensation Carly Rae Jepsen (Call Me Maybe), Fran Drescher of TV’s The Nanny fame, NeNe Leakes of The Real Housewives of Atlanta fame, and for the first time in Broadway history, an African American Cinderella played by KeKe Palmer of film and TV fame. Writer Douglas Carter Beane recreated the book for Cinderella using the original French version by Charles Perrault, in which Cinderella is a woman of strength and kindness. Beane thought that was the more important theme of the story; kindness and strength in the face of cruelty. See his interview about his Tony nomination below.
